Gemlik's Bus Connectivity Expands, But Route Debates Linger

08 October 2026

Once a quiet town, Gemlik has increasingly become a critical transit hub in Turkey, thanks to an expanding local bus network and strengthening connections to Istanbul, the nearest major city. At the same time, fare changes and proposals to shift popular routes from city centers to intercity terminals have sparked public debate.

What's driving Gemlik's transit transformation? Its central location at the southern edge of the Bursa metropolitan area. The town sits about 45 minutes by car from the center of Bursa, Turkey's fourth-largest city, and some 90 kilometers east of Istanbul. The Gemlik bus station, located 500 meters from the city center on Highway D575, is now a key stop on several popular intercity routes.

Locally, transport officials have expanded bus capacity and added key new lines. In February, BURULAŞ, the Bursa public transport agency, added 28 minibuses to the local fleet and increased service frequency. Previously, the network operated 14 vehicles, making 150 daily trips. Now, 28 buses run 336 trips, reducing the interval between services from 30 to 15 minutes. Fare increases accompanied these changes: trips from Gemlik to Bursa or nearby Mudanya now cost 95 TL each, while shorter intracity lines cost 60 TL or less.

The local network has also grown, with new lines to newly-opened destinations like the Gemlik State Hospital. Public transit advocates have pushed for greater connections to both Istanbul and Uludağ University, reflecting the town's ties to the big city and its growth as a college town.

Inspired by demand, intercity connections to Istanbul are growing. According to FlixBus, busses provide service between Gemlik and 118 destinations, including central Istanbul on either side of the Bosphorus. CheckMyBus lists 96 bus routes between Istanbul and Gemlik spread across 8 carriers, with the fastest link taking just 1 hour and 15 minutes. But as of February 2023, no direct bus links between Gemlik and Istanbul's Sabiha Gökçen Airport existed, forcing travelers to make two transfers.

Those looking to travel to Istanbul airports may soon have a straight-forward option. A controversial upgrade project proposed changing the terminus for two key Gemlik lines, the 101 and 102, to the Bursa Intercity Bus Terminal. The proposal, notable for requiring passengers to transfer or walk between the bus and tram, was initially rejected in 2022 before returning to the council agenda this year. If approved, the change could ease connections for passengers going to the airport, since the terminal is closer to the highway, but at the expense of making transfers harder for passengers headed for downtown Bursa.

The UKOME transit authority is reviewing the proposal, but a final decision remains to be made, and the status of an alternative approach remains unclear. As more changes are surely to come, travelers will be paying close attention to where Gemlik's buses will roll next.
